The glistening waters of Lake Wairarapa

2. The Region

We are lucky enough to sit between two of the most stunning and contrasting regions in New Zealand, the vibrant capital city of Wellington and the picturesque Wairarapa.

Wairarapa

Wharekauhau is located in a small rural area of New Zealand known as the Wairarapa; the direct translation into Maori means ‘land of glistening waters’. Water is known as the essence of life and the early Maori settlers captured this when naming this abundant region.

The Wairarapa has become an icon for rural regions, as it has built everything on the back of old-fashioned hard work, which is still evident today: there are no shopping malls, or over-crowded streets, but instead small family-run business that are dedicated to refining their chosen craft. The Wairarapa can be described as a region of artisans and perfectionists.

Wellington

Wellington City, to our East, also known as the capital of culture, or New Zealand’s version of the city that never sleeps.

Wellington has it all: from the vibrant café and restaurant culture overlooking Wellington harbour, to the more dramatic performing arts scene, the National Museum of New Zealand—Te Papa, and is home to the historical parliament buildings, lovingly known as the ‘Beehive’.

The diverse make-up of Wellington means it is more than just a concrete jungle, it is a city with a heart, a city that is alive in every essence of the word.
